One of the occupants . . . was a thin, sallow-faced man, with strongly-marked southern features, and a head and physiognomy which strongly indicated culture, refinement and genius. When he emerged from the carriage, which he did only with the assistance of others, it was discovered that he had an artificial limb, and used a crutch. After making his way into the hotel, he at once took possession of a large front parlor, and, surrounded by six or eight gentlemanly-looking men, he was prepared for business. A Confederate flag was run out a window, and head-quarters established. This intellectual-looking man was Lieutenant-General R. S. Ewell.43
